BIFF 2026 Tickets: The English Booking Page Is Still a Placeholder

The 31st Busan International Film Festival runs 6–15 October 2026. Five weeks out, the English booking page is a placeholder image and no on-sale date exists in either language. What is fixed, what last year's schedule says about when the window opens, and the one page you should not use to pick an event.

Why this scene matters

There is a file on the Busan International Film Festival’s English site called commingsoon.gif. The misspelling is theirs. It is the entire contents of the page headed Booking Information, and on 1 September 2026 it was also the entire contents of Theater Regulations, Festival Map, and Opening & Closing Information. Four of the six pages in the English Audience Guide are that one image.

The festival opens in five weeks.

None of this means the festival is disorganised. It means the English side of the site is built late, and it is built after the Korean side — a pattern we have written about before, and one that costs foreign visitors real money when the page being published late is the only page that says when tickets go on sale.

So this article does the part that can be done now: separate what is actually fixed from what is merely unpublished, and show you where the answer will appear when it does.

What is fixed

These come from the festival’s own pages and are not in dispute.

The full 2026 line-up is already published — competition, galas, 36 films under Icons, a Japanese animation strand. What is not published is how to buy a seat at any of it.

That retrospective is worth a note if you cannot make the dates: the Korean Film Archive co-hosting it is the same institution that runs a free cinema in Seoul with English-subtitled screenings all year.

When the window opens — and why “book early” is useless advice

Last year’s booking schedule was published as a press release, in Korean, on the festival’s news board. It is the best available guide to the shape of 2026, so here it is counted backwards from opening day.

WHEN THE BOOKING WINDOW ACTUALLY OPENS The 30th festival, 2025 — counted backwards from opening day D−19 29 Aug 2025 · 18:00 The full screening schedule is published Until this moment there is nothing to choose from — no titles, no times, no venues D−12 5 Sep 2025 · 14:00 First booking wave opens Opening and closing galas, Open Cinema, Midnight Passion, Actors’ House, Community BIFF D−8 9 Sep 2025 · 14:00 Second booking wave — every other screening All seats sold online. Maximum two tickets per transaction D−1 16 Sep 2025 Last day to cancel without a fee During the festival itself, cancelling costs ₩1,000 per ticket D-day 17 Sep 2025 The 30th festival opens Ran ten days, to 26 September The 31st festival opens 6 October 2026. As of 1 September 2026 — D−35 — none of the five dates above had a 2026 equivalent on the English booking page or the festival's Korean notice board. That is why this row is empty. 2025 dates from the festival's own booking press release, 28 August 2025. D− values calculated by us.
Read the left column rather than the dates. The 2025 on-sale days are long gone; it is the offsets that repeat. The dashed box at the bottom is the part to look at — five weeks out, there is still nothing to put in it.

Twelve days. That is how much warning ticket-buyers had for the headline events in 2025, and eight days for everything else.

The consequence runs in both directions, and both are expensive. Book your flights early and you are committing to dates before the schedule exists — you may land on a day when nothing you wanted is showing. Wait for the schedule and you are booking flights and a Haeundae hotel inside a fortnight of a festival that fills the district.

There is no version of this where you get to be relaxed and organised. The best you can do is know which trade you are making.

If you are coming from Seoul, the train is the straightforward part, and it got cheaper today: KTX and SRT merged on 1 September 2026.

The rules that will apply, whatever the dates turn out to be

The 2025 press release also set out the booking mechanics. These are structural rather than seasonal, so they are the part most likely to carry over — though we cannot promise they will.

  • Every seat is sold online. Not some. Every seat.
  • Two tickets per transaction, maximum.
  • Cancellation is possible until 30 minutes before a screening starts. Free before the festival opens; ₩1,000 per ticket once it has.
  • A mobile ticket can be swapped for a paper one at the BIFF box office, but entering with the mobile ticket is faster.

The trap is in what “box office” does and does not mean:

The Korean sentence this comes from
온라인에서 매진되지 않은 작품 또는 취소표가 발생한 작품에 한 해 영화제 기간 중 BIFF매표소에서 현장 구매할 수 있다.

Only for films that have not sold out online, or for which cancelled tickets have become available, can you buy in person at the BIFF box office during the festival.

The counter is a leftovers desk, not a second chance. And the one on-site window that does sell in advance is not open to you — in 2025 the festival opened a physical counter specifically for people aged 65 and over and people with disabilities, described as 디지털 취약계층 (di-ji-teol chwi-yak-gye-cheung), “the digitally underserved”. Reasonable policy. It simply is not a route for a visitor who missed the online window.

Which puts the whole thing on your card working on a Korean website — and a foreign card that behaves perfectly in Korean shops can still be refused online. That failure has its own cause and its own workaround, which we wrote up separately. Sort it out before the booking window opens, not during it.

Actors’ House: ₩15,000, and nobody is going to translate it

Six actors will each sit for a career interview at the Culture Hall on the 9th floor of Shinsegae Centum City: Lee Min-ho (7 Oct), Kim Go-eun and Kim Min-ha (8 Oct), Ryu Seung-ryong and Ju Ji-hoon (9 Oct), Shin Min-a (10 Oct). Tickets ₩15,000.

For a K-drama audience this is the single most tempting thing on the programme, so read the line the festival puts at the top of that page:

※ English interpretation not provided

Every one of the six is listed as Language: Korean. This is a ninety-minute conversation, and you will not understand it. That is not a complaint about BIFF — they have said so plainly, in English, which is more than most venues manage. It is a warning that the most expensive impulse purchase on the site is also the least accessible one.

Do not choose your session from the English filmographies

Here is the thing we did not expect to find.

Each Actors’ House entry on the English page carries a filmography. All six of them belong to the wrong actor.

The page saysThe filmography actually shown
Lee Min-hoKim You-jung
Kim Go-eunSon Ye-jin
Kim Min-haNinomiya Kazunari
Ryu Seung-ryongLee Byung-hun
Ju Ji-hoonLee Byung-hun
Shin Min-aLee Byung-hun

Lee Byung-hun’s credits — Squid Game, Joint Security Area, A Bittersweet Life — appear three times, under three different actors.

The four names that surface are Kim You-jung, Son Ye-jin, Ninomiya Kazunari and Lee Byung-hun, and those four were the Actors’ House line-up at the 30th edition in 2025. Our reading is that the page was rebuilt with the new photographs, dates and headings while the filmography blocks were left behind, and the last one was copied down the remaining slots. We cannot prove the mechanism — only that every pairing on the page is wrong, which we checked one entry at a time.

The practical instruction is short. Choose your Actors’ House session by the name in the heading, which is correct, and ignore the filmography underneath it, which is not. If you are deciding between two actors on the strength of work you loved, you are currently reading about somebody else entirely.

What to do between now and the announcement

  1. Do not trust a booking date you read on a blog. Several English and Korean sites already state a specific 2026 on-sale date and time. The festival has published no such date. We looked at both the English booking page and the Korean notice board on 1 September and found nothing.
  2. Watch the Korean side. The announcement came as a Korean press release on the news board last year, and the Korean board is where the 2026 procurement notices are appearing now. The English page will follow it, not lead it.
  3. Get the payment problem solved early, because the window is short and entirely online.
  4. Decide your trade before the schedule drops — flexible dates and no tickets, or fixed tickets and expensive last-minute beds.

The festival will publish all of this. It published it on 28 August last year, nineteen days before opening. Nineteen days before 6 October 2026 is 17 September. That arithmetic is ours, not theirs, and it is a pattern rather than a promise — but it tells you roughly when to start refreshing.

What we could not find, and what we did not open

We did not find a 2026 booking date, because none has been published — that absence is the article, not a gap in it. Every date and rule in the booking-mechanics section is from the 2025 press release, offered as the shape of the thing rather than as 2026 fact; the festival can change any of it.

Two limits on our checking. We opened four of the six English Audience Guide pages and found the same placeholder in all four — we did not open Booth Information or Merchandise, so “four” is the number we will stand behind. And we could not locate a Korean-language counterpart to the English Actors’ House page, so we make no claim about whether the Korean version carries the same filmography error.

The ₩15,000 price, the venue, the six dates and the “no English interpretation” notice are 2026 figures, read off the English page on 1 September 2026.
