Is KPop Demon Hunters Over in Korea? What the Search Data Says

In Korea, searches for KPop Demon Hunters are running at under 2% of their July 2025 peak. Squid Game, by comparison, fell to a plateau and stayed there. The sequel is confirmed for 2029. Here is what Korean search data actually shows about how fast a global hit fades at home — and what it left behind.

Why this scene matters

Short answer: as a live search phenomenon inside Korea, yes — it is over. As a thing that changed what gets made, no.

We can be specific rather than impressionistic about this, because Naver publishes what Korea searches for. Naver is the search engine most Koreans actually use, so its trend data is a reasonable proxy for domestic attention rather than global attention.

Naver search interest, monthly. Both keyword groups were requested in a single query, so the two lines are directly comparable — the highest single month in the pair (KPop Demon Hunters, July 2025) is set to 100. Retrieved from Naver DataLab on 15 August 2026. August 2026 is excluded because the month was only half over when we pulled the data, and a half month at the end of a line looks like a collapse that has not happened.

The numbers

July 2025 was the peak. Korean interest went from essentially nothing in May 2025 to 28.6 in June, when the film landed, to 100 in July.

Twelve months later it was at 1.8 — under 2% of the peak. The decline is monotonic apart from a small bump in March 2026, which is when the sequel was announced.

Put another way: in July 2025 the film was, by search volume, roughly five times the size of Squid Game at Squid Game’s own season-three launch. By mid-2026 the two were level, both near the floor.

The shape matters more than the number

Compare the two curves and you see two different kinds of hit.

Squid Game fell and then stopped falling. From September 2025 through July 2026 it sat between 1.5 and 2.4 every single month — a plateau, not a decay. That is what a franchise looks like: a permanent, low, self-renewing level of attention.

KPop Demon Hunters fell and kept falling. It has not yet found a floor. It went 43.8 → 26.8 → 13.4 → 8.1 → 6.9 → 4.1, roughly halving every couple of months.

The honest reading is that in Korea it behaved like an event rather than like a franchise. It was enormous, it was fast, and domestic attention moved on faster than the international conversation did.

What did not fade

Three things outlasted the search curve, and they are the reason the answer is not simply “yes.”

The sequel is confirmed. Netflix and Sony announced in March 2026 that a follow-up is in production with the original directors, Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, returning — reportedly targeting 2029. That announcement is visible in the chart as the small March bump, and it is the one moment the line went up.

The film reported more than 500 million views on Netflix since its June 2025 debut, and “Golden” became the first K-pop song to win a Grammy. Those are permanent facts about the ceiling of the category, not about this month’s attention.

It moved the visual vocabulary. Korean traditional imagery — the gat hat, tiger-and-magpie folk painting, temple and market settings — reached an audience that had never encountered it, inside a story that treated it as ordinary rather than exotic. That is durable in a way a search curve is not.

What this means if you are planning a trip around it

Do not expect Korea to be visibly excited about it. There is no permanent installation, no themed district, and no ongoing event. Asking about it in Seoul in 2026 will get you a friendly but mild response — the equivalent of asking about a film from two summers ago, because that is what it is.

The Seoul in the film is not a place you can visit. It is a composite built from real elements — Namsan, markets, alleyways, a bathhouse — rather than a set of locations with addresses. The nearest thing to a pilgrimage is Namsan and N Seoul Tower, which are worth the trip regardless and are on this page.

If you want the food and the objects, they are ordinary and everywhere. The market food in the film is the food in any Korean market. That is the point the film was making, and it is the part a visitor can actually have.

The wider lesson about Korean attention

This is worth internalising if you follow Korean culture from outside, because it explains a mismatch you will keep running into.

Korean domestic attention moves faster than international attention does. A thing that is peaking on your feed may have been over in Korea for six months. We have measured this before with consumer fads — the same shape, the same speed — and it applies to content as much as to snacks.

The practical consequence: if you plan a trip around a Korean cultural moment you read about, check when the moment was. By the time it reaches an English-language article, the Korean curve is usually already coming down.

What this article does not claim

Search interest is not popularity, and Naver is not the world. These figures measure how often people in Korea typed these words into Naver. They do not measure viewing, listening, affection or memory, and they say nothing about audiences outside Korea — where the film’s trajectory may look completely different.

The index is relative, not absolute. Naver DataLab returns numbers scaled so that the highest point in the query equals 100. We requested both keyword groups in a single query, which is what makes the two lines comparable to each other. There is no way to convert these into a count of searches.

Keyword choice affects the result. We grouped 케데헌 (the Korean abbreviation), 케이팝 데몬 헌터스 and the English title together, and 오징어게임 with its spaced variant. Different keyword choices would shift the lines somewhat.

We excluded August 2026 because we retrieved the data mid-month. A partial month plotted alongside complete ones invents a cliff.

The sequel’s 2029 date is a reported target, not a release date. Announcements move.

The photographs are of Namsan’s lock fences, not of anything in the film. The film’s Seoul is animated and composite. We are showing you the real hill because it is the closest real thing, and saying so rather than implying a location tour exists.
