You Can Get a Korean 010 Number as a Tourist — It Still Will Not Get You Into a Bank
A tourist eSIM in Korea does give you a Korean 010 number, which most guides get wrong. What it does not give you is Korean identity verification — the carriers say so themselves. Restaurant and taxi apps will text you a code. Banks and government sites will not accept you at all, and no amount of paying more changes that.

Most English guides to Korean eSIMs tell you the same thing: buy one, get data, and accept that you will not have a Korean phone number.
That is wrong. A tourist eSIM from a Korean carrier does come with a Korean 010 number — KT’s eSIM page opens by saying so: “All mobile phone numbers are provided with the 010.”
When you first see that number depends on the carrier. LG U+ states outright, on its Korean product page, that the number is not displayed overseas and appears in your settings only after you enter Korea — which is probably why so many people conclude it does not exist:
eSIM 전화번호는 한국 도착 후 단말기 설정에서 확인할 수 있습니다. 해외에서는 전화번호가 표시되지 않고, 한국 입국 후 번호 표시 됩니다. The eSIM phone number can be checked in your device settings after arriving in Korea. Overseas, the number is not displayed; it is shown after entering Korea.

That is LG U+‘s documented behaviour, not a universal law — SKT’s online eSIM arrives as a QR code by email, on your phone wherever you happen to scan it. In an earlier version of this article we stated the arrival-only display as a fact of all tourist eSIMs. It is not, and the correction is in our ledger.
What is true is stranger and more useful to know. You get a number. You still cannot verify your identity. Those are two different things in Korea, and the gap between them is where visitors get stuck.
The three levels, and where the wall is
What the carrier says, in its own words
This is not our inference. It is printed in the product notice on LG U+‘s English site:
When using Voice/SMS services, SMS verification for restaurant and taxi reservation apps is available, but Identity Verification for banking or government services is not supported. If you use Data-only services, SMS verification is not available.
Two sentences, and they draw the whole map. Voice/SMS gets you into the everyday apps. Nothing gets you into a bank.
SKT says the same thing in its own considerations list — with one clause that goes further: “Personal authentication services and text message receipt for payments are unavailable.” Two carriers, independently, drawing the same wall in their own product documents.
Why the wall exists
Korean identity verification — 본인확인 (bon-in-hwag-in) — is not simply “can this phone receive a text”. It checks that a number is registered against a verified national identity: a resident registration number for Koreans, or an alien registration number for foreign residents.
A tourist SIM is registered against your passport, which is enough to give you a number and enough to sell you service. It is not enough to enter that system.
So the failure is not a technical one you can pay your way around. Buying the more expensive plan does not help. A longer stay does not help. What would help is an alien registration card, which means actually living here.
What this means at eleven at night
Restaurant and taxi apps: you are fine — with Data + Voice. Kakao T works, reservation apps that text you a code will reach you.
Food delivery: expect trouble. Baemin and Coupang Eats sit closer to the verification side of the line than the reservation side, and this is the one people most want at eleven at night.
Korean online shopping: browse freely, checkout is another matter. Coupang and similar hook into the same verification system.
Banking, PASS, government sites: no. Not with any tourist product, at any price.
Where you buy the plan that sends texts — the carriers part ways here
An earlier version of this article said Data + Voice “can only be bought at an airport counter” and that “you cannot sort it out from home.” That was one carrier’s rule, written up as the market’s. We checked all three carriers’ own pages on 16 August 2026, and they differ exactly where it matters:
| Carrier | Voice-capable eSIM | Passport verification |
|---|---|---|
| SKT | Sold online at skroaming.com, or at the airport roaming centre | Online, through a QR code in your emailed voucher — but only between 8am and 10pm Korean time — or at the airport counter |
| KT | Airport roaming centre only (“available on site only”); data-only sells online | At the KT counter, as an entry check |
| LG U+ | Order online if you like, but the QR code itself is handed over at the airport counter against your passport | At the counter |
So the old warning survives at KT and LG U+, and fails at SKT — where you genuinely can sort it out from home: buy online, install the QR from the email, verify your passport online, and land connected. Two caveats keep the airport counter in the story. SKT’s online verification window closes overnight, precisely when long-haul flights land; and SKT’s own page lists the counter as the alternative route when online verification does not go through. Data works either way — SKT states that mobile data runs regardless of verification status; what verification unlocks is calls and texts.
If you are landing at 1am at Incheon, Gimpo or Gimhae and you chose KT or LG U+, the counter with your passport is still the only route to a texting plan. Plan for it.
What it costs to send things
Data + Voice charges outgoing use against a balance rather than including it:
| Domestic call | ₩264 per minute (4.4 per second) |
| Domestic SMS | ₩55 per message |
| Domestic MMS | ₩1,100 per message |
| Incoming calls and texts | Free |
Rates from LG U+‘s published table, checked 16 August 2026; carriers differ — SKT’s own table lists the same per-second call rate but ₩33 per SMS, and its top-ups start at ₩5,500. The practical read either way: incoming is free, and a verification code costs you nothing to receive. You are not buying a phone plan, you are buying the ability to be reached when an app demands it.
Before you buy anything
Check your phone takes an eSIM. Dial *#06#. If an EID appears, it does. LG U+ states plainly that eSIM does not work on Google Pixel, OPPO or Motorola devices, and that phones bought outside Korea may not work depending on network conditions — worth reading twice if you own one of those.
Your phone must be carrier-unlocked.
Install while you still have wi-fi. Activation needs a connection. Doing it at the airport with no Korean data and no working foreign line is the one genuinely avoidable mistake here.
Do not delete it. An eSIM cannot be reissued once installed. Delete it by accident on day two and you have bought nothing.
Purchase caps differ by carrier. LG U+ allows up to three items per passport; KT allows one voice SIM plus four data SIMs per person; SKT ties passport verification to a single product per passport — a second voice eSIM on the same passport cannot be verified.
And note the sequencing quirk, because the two carriers start the clock differently. At LG U+ your plan’s days begin when you first use data. At SKT they begin when you scan the QR code — the days count in 24-hour blocks from the scan itself. Buying a week early costs you nothing at either carrier; at SKT, scanning a week early costs you the week. Buy whenever, scan when you are ready to start.
So which one
Sightseeing, restaurants you walk into, taxis, museums: Data Only, bought online before you fly, and it matters who you buy it from.
A Data Only eSIM sold by the Korean carrier itself carries an 010 number — that is why LG U+ has a line on its data page explaining when the number appears. A Data Only eSIM sold through a travel platform is usually a reseller plan on the same networks, and those are sold as data and nothing else. Klook’s Korea eSIM says so on its own product page: “This is a Data-only SIM card. Calls, texts, or topping up additional credits will not be possible.”
Both connect you to the same towers at the same speed. If all you want is maps, translation and messaging apps, the reseller plan is cheaper and arrives in minutes. If you want a hotel or a tour to be able to ring you back, buy from the carrier.
Booking things that text you, or staying long enough to need an account: Data + Voice — online in advance from SKT (verify your passport through the emailed voucher, between 8am and 10pm Korean time), or at the airport counter with KT and LG U+, passport in hand.
Anything involving a Korean bank: neither. That is not what these products are.
We have not quoted plan prices here beyond the call rates, because they change weekly and by carrier, and a stale number at a checkout screen is worse than no number at all.
