Eight Olive Young Stores in Myeong-dong, and the Biggest One Is the Furthest

Myeong-dong has eight Olive Young branches inside a few hundred metres, and nothing on the Korean site tells a visitor which one to walk into. We measured all six that do tax refunds and checked where the money actually comes back. The largest and most famous branch is the furthest from the subway and the only one that cannot hand your refund back at the till.

Stand at the top of Myeong-dong’s main shopping street and open a map. Type “Olive Young.” You will get eight results, and several of them will be less than a hundred metres apart.

Myeong-dong has eight Olive Young branches. Not eight in central Seoul — eight in Myeong-dong. Olive Young Myeongdong Town, Myeongdong, Central Myeongdong Town, Myeongdong Time Walk, Myeongdong 2-ga, Myeongdong-geori, Myeongdong Station, Myeongdong-daero. All eight are open 10:00–22:30.

Nothing on the map tells you which one to walk into, and the difference is not decoration. Two of them cannot process a tax refund at all, and a third — the one with the biggest sign — can only refund you at the airport.

Which one to walk to

We measured the walk to every Myeong-dong branch that does tax refunds, on Kakao Map, in shortest-time mode, on 23 August 2026.

THE ONE WITH THE BIGGEST NAME IS THE FURTHEST Six Olive Young branches in Myeong-dong that do tax refunds, by walking distance. 0 100m 200m 300m 400m 500m Myeongdong-daero from Myeongdong Stn (Line 4) 146m · 2 min Myeongdong Station from Myeongdong Stn (Line 4) 192m · 3 min Central Myeongdong Town from Myeongdong Stn (Line 4) 302m · 4 min Myeongdong Time Walk from Euljiro 1-ga Stn (Line 2) 372m · 6 min Myeongdong from Myeongdong Stn (Line 4) 378m · 6 min Olive Young Myeongdong Town from Myeongdong Stn (Line 4) 453m · 7 min Refund handed back at the till Refund only at the airport Two more branches — Myeongdong 2-ga and Myeongdong-geori — do no tax refund at all.
Six branches, by walking distance from the nearest subway station. Green branches hand the refund back at the till; the orange one refunds only at the airport. Distances measured on Kakao Map, 23 August 2026.

Five of the six are reached from Myeongdong Station on Line 4. Only Myeongdong Time Walk is closer to Euljiro 1-ga Station on Line 2 — it sits on Namdaemun-ro, on the far side of the district. Either ride costs the same ₩1,550 base fare with a transit card.

The nearest is Myeongdong-daero, at 146 metres and about two minutes. The furthest, at 453 metres and about seven minutes, is Olive Young Myeongdong Town — the flagship, the one with the largest frontage and the one search engines put first.

That is not a criticism of the shop. It is a warning about the map: the branch a visitor is most likely to aim for is the one that costs the most walking, in a district where you are probably already walking a great deal.

Where the tax refund actually happens

Korea refunds value-added tax to short-stay foreign visitors on qualifying purchases, and there are two ways it can reach you. Olive Young’s own store finder separates them into two filters, and the difference decides your afternoon.

택스리펀드 — tax refund. The store issues the paperwork. You claim the money at the airport before you fly.

택스리펀드 (즉시환급) — instant refund. The deduction happens at the till. You walk out having already paid the lower price, with nothing to do at Incheon.

We applied each filter on its own and compared what survived.

Olive Young Myeongdong Town will issue a refund, but not at the till. You carry the receipt to the airport. If you are flying in three days and are shopping now, that is fine. If you have a tight connection, or you are the kind of traveller who loses receipts, walk the three hundred metres to one of the other five.

And Myeongdong 2-ga and Myeongdong-geori do not appear under either filter. They are ordinary neighbourhood branches that happen to sit in a tourist district. Nothing on the shopfront says so.

There is a limit to what we can tell you here. We read Olive Young’s own filters; we did not stand at a till and test a purchase. Instant refund also has statutory thresholds and per-person caps that the store finder does not state, and those are set by tax law rather than by the shop.

What the Korean site cannot tell you at all

We opened every filter on the store finder to see what else it knows. The full list:

Filter groupWhat you can ask for
판매 매장 — ranges stockedluxury edit · men’s care · lifestyle · health foods
고객 서비스 — servicespickup · smart return · tax refund · tax refund (instant) · easy payment · parking · parking subsidy
상품권 판매 — vouchers soldCJ vouchers · culture vouchers · gift cards

There is no filter for language. You cannot ask the Korean site which branch has staff who speak English, Chinese or Japanese. That information is not published, in any of the four categories, for any of the 8 branches. This is the ordinary shape of the problem in Korea: the English page is rarely the Korean page translated, and here there is no English page for it to be a smaller copy of.

In practice the instant-refund filter is the closest proxy, because instant refund only applies to foreign passport holders — a branch set up to process it is a branch that deals with foreigners daily. But that is an inference, and we are labelling it as one rather than dressing it up as a fact.

The thing you came in to buy, and why the label defeats you

Walk to the lip tints and you will meet the real language problem, which is not signage.

Take Peripera, a Clio brand that launched in 2005 and now sells its Mood Glowy Tint in 27 shades. On Olive Young Global, the English site, every shade name is translated. Tiny Strawberry. Juicy Peach. Campus Queen. Cherry So What. Glass Heart. Iron Will.

So the names are in English. The problem is what the English says.

Number 20 is “Brown Yakgwa.” Yakgwa is a deep-fried honey-and-wheat confection, glossy and dark amber. If you know that, the shade name is a precise colour description. If you do not, it is a noise. It is not a slip — Peripera builds whole collections around Korean foods, and has run a yakgwa collection, a tteok rice-cake collection, and a sweet-potato collection.

Now look at the brand’s own Korean shop, where a separate set of shades is sold that never reaches the English site at all:

No.Shade nameSold as
021쿨소평가Peri Lottery collection
029쿨레벌떡Tteok — rice cake — collection
036쿨타강사School of Hip collection
038쿨세자빈Goong comic collaboration

Every one of those begins with 쿨 — cool. In Korea, deciding whether you are a warm tone or a cool tone is the first question anyone asks before buying colour cosmetics, and here the answer is folded into the first syllable of a pun. A Korean shopper reads the tone and gets the joke. Number 036, 쿨타강사, plays on 일타강사, the star instructor at a private cram school. Number 038, 쿨세자빈, is a Joseon crown princess consort, from a collaboration with the comic Goong.

None of that survives translation, and none of it needs to — those shades are only sold in Korean. But it tells you what the English shade list is doing. It is translating the mood and dropping the information.

Swatch on the back of your hand. The names will not save you.

One number before you buy

The same 27-shade Mood Glowy Tint, on the same company’s two websites, on the same day:

  • Olive Young Korea: ₩13,000
  • Olive Young Global: US$16.00

Whatever exchange rate applies the day you read this, that gap has not been small in years. Olive Young Global also states plainly that it does not ship to the United States, which removes the option entirely for a large share of the people reading this in English.

Buy it here. That is the whole advice.

What we did not check

  • We measured six branches. Myeongdong 2-ga and Myeongdong-geori were left off the distance chart because they do no tax refund, which is the question the chart asks.
  • The store finder’s results follow the map view. We looked at central Seoul. Do not read this as “Hongdae and Gangnam have none” — we did not look.
  • We have not tested a purchase, a refund, or a shade at a till. Everything above is what Olive Young, Clio and Kakao publish about themselves, read on 23 August 2026.
