Buying a K-Pop Album in Korea: 152 Companies Count, and Four Olive Youngs

Fans buy K-pop albums so that somebody counts them, and whether anybody does is a property of the till. Hanteo publishes the list of shops whose sales reach its chart — 152 companies in Korean, 151 in English, and inside each chain, named branches. Four Olive Youngs are on it; one is in Myeong-dong. And Circle's album chart counts shipments, not sales.

Why this scene matters

Four copies of the same album on one counter, and a good chance none of them will ever go into a machine that plays a disc. That is not a criticism. It is the design. What is being bought is not the object but a unit of evidence — and the evidence only exists if somebody writes it down.

Whether anybody writes it down is a property of the till, not of the album.

Korea has two organisations doing the writing, they publish different numbers, and one of them lists — in public, by name — every shop whose sales reach it. That list is the useful thing, and almost nobody outside Korea reads it, because it is a Korean-language page with an English page attached that is missing an entry.

ONE ALBUM, THREE CHARTS, THREE DIFFERENT MOMENTS One of these three had already counted your copy before you landed. Only the middle column happens at the counter you are standing at. TIME → WEEKS BEFORE YOU ARRIVE Boxes ship from the distributor THE MOMENT YOU PAY The till rings up your copy LATER, IF NOBODY BUYS IT The copy goes back unsold CIRCLE ALBUM CHART Wholesale shipment units, minus returnsYour purchase does not move thisone. CIRCLE ALBUM CHART, AGAIN The return is subtractedThe only chart here that can godown. What each chart counts is the operator’s own wording, from its own page. The arrangement on a time axis is ours. Spacing along the axis carries no meaning — it is an order of events, not a scale.
Four boxes, three charts, two organisations. Circle runs the blue, green and dashed ones — its album chart appears twice because it is the only chart here that can be revised downwards. Hanteo runs the orange one, and Hanteo's is the only one of the three that publishes which tills feed it.

Two organisations count, and they are not counting the same thing

Circle Chart is run by the Korea Popmusic Industry Association and is the closest thing Korea has to a national chart. Here is what its album chart says it counts, in a single line at the top of its own page:

The Korean sentence this comes from
순위집계 : 앨범(TAPE, LP, CD, USB, KiT, Platform Album 등) 출하량(-반품량)으로 집계

Ranking: compiled from album shipment volume (minus returns) — tape, LP, CD, USB, KiT, platform album and so on.

Shipments. Not sales. The moment that chart counted your copy was the moment a distributor sent a box to the shop — which, for an album released before you booked your flight, has already happened. Standing at the counter does not move it. Its FAQ puts the same thing a second way, calling the unit 출고단위 도매 수량, wholesale quantity by dispatch unit, with returns netted off. So it is the one chart in this article that can go down: an unsold copy sent back subtracts.

Circle also publishes a Retail Album Chart, and that one does count what you would expect — copies sold at retail stores, accumulated. It sits one line below the album chart in the same menu. The word retail in the name of the second chart is the giveaway about the first one.

Hanteo Chart is the other. It is a private company — Hanteo Global, Inc. — and it counts sales in real time. Its album chart page carries a timestamp accurate to the minute; when we opened it, 집계 기준 (jip-gye gi-jun), basis of aggregation, 2026.09.03 17:44. That is a line no shipment-based chart could print.

This is also the chart behind 초동 (cho-dong), the number fans trade in. Hanteo keeps a Hall of Fame page for it and describes it as the sales recorded during the Initial Chodong period — without saying, anywhere on that page, how long the period is.

Hanteo is also the one that publishes its shop list. So the rest of this article is about Hanteo, because it is the only one of the two where a visitor can check, before paying, whether this particular counter is wired up.

A chain is not a shop

The list is called 인증 패밀리 (in-jeung pae-mil-li), certified family. On the Korean page today it holds 152 companies, split into eight Premium Family and 144 Gold Family. Entertainment agencies are on it (SM, YG, JYP, HYBE, ADOR, Pledis), so are global online shops (Ktown4U, Weverse, YesAsia, Tower Records, FYE), and so are things that are not record shops at all: four bookshop chains, a coffee franchise, three convenience-store operators, and Olive Young.

Each company opens to reveal its store codes, and this is where the useful part is. A store code is per branch. The company being on the list is not the same as the shop in front of you being on it.

Company on the listStore codes registeredWhat that actually means
교보문고 Kyobo Book Centre37Named branches — Gwanghwamun, Gangnam, Jamsil, Busan, and so on
영풍문고 Youngpoong Bookstore49Named branches, starting with the Jonggak flagship
예스이십사 YES248Online, plus a handful of named shops
알라딘 Aladin1One code for the whole company
올리브영 Olive Young5Online, plus Seongsu, Myeongdong Station, Hongdae Playground, Doota
지에스리테일 GS257Six named stores, plus one online
BGF리테일 CU6Five named stores, plus the app
코리아세븐 7-Eleven4Three named stores, plus online
뮤직코리아 Music Korea5The one company here whose code we matched to its own shopfront

Read the Olive Young row again. There are Olive Young shops on most shopping streets in Seoul, and we have already counted how many stand in Myeong-dong alone — eight. Four Olive Young branches appear on Hanteo’s list, and only one of them is in Myeong-dong: the Myeongdong Station branch. The other three are Seongsu, Hongdae Playground, and Doota, which is in Dongdaemun. Buying an album at the wrong branch of a chain that is on the list should therefore produce the same chart entry as buying it at a shop that has never heard of Hanteo: none.

We should be exact about that “should”. Hanteo nowhere writes a sentence saying an unregistered branch does not count. What it publishes is a list of registered store codes, an instruction to shops about displaying the code, and a line on the family page telling buyers to check the code and the year mark before they buy. The inference is ours. It is also the only thing the whole apparatus is for.

The convenience-store rows are the same shape and worth naming plainly, because “K-pop albums at Korean convenience stores” is a genuine thing that exists now. Six GS25 stores are registered, and two of them are inside Incheon Airport. Three 7-Elevens. Five CUs, two of which are also at the airport. Out of tens of thousands of shops.

152 in Korean, 151 in English

We opened the Korean list and the English list of the same page in the same session and counted the family codes on each. Korean: 152. English: 151.

The missing one is 미래글로벌코리아, code HF0082GFX001. It is present in Korean, absent in English, and there is nothing on the English page to tell a reader that a row has been left out. Everything else matches, code for code.

This is not a scandal — it is a page that was updated in one language first. But it is the exact failure mode we keep documenting on Korean sites’ English pages, and here it lands on the one page whose entire purpose is to be complete. A list that is 99.3% of a list is worse than a list, because it reads as authoritative.

The English page has a second, louder version of the same problem. Its “What is Hanteo Chart?” page still advertises an Authentication Chart, a chart fans feed by verifying albums they bought anywhere in the world, and ends the paragraph with an invitation to go and do it. Follow the link and the chart is empty, under a notice — printed in Korean, on the English page — saying the certification chart is undergoing data cleanup and system improvement, and will be back. No date.

The mark goes on the door

Hanteo tells its certified shops where to put the badge, and the instruction is specific enough to use as a checklist. For an offline shop it is mandatory in one place:

The Korean sentence this comes from
[필수]매장 입구 간판, 또는 도어 우측 상단

[Required] On the shop's entrance sign, or the upper right of the door.

HANTEO CHART, guide for family stores 한터차트, 패밀리를 위한 가이드 3 September 2026

Optional placements are above the counter or on the album shelf. For an online shop the mandatory placement is the footer of every page. The symbol carries the shop’s own family number, and the certification mark is renewed by year — so the year printed on it is part of the claim.

Music Korea does this exactly as specified. Its own site lists a single offline shop — named 명동2호점, Myeong-dong branch number two, with no branch number one listed anywhere on the page — on the ground floor at 134 Toegye-ro in Jung-gu, open 10:00 to 22:00 daily. The number in a Korean road address tells you how far along the road you are. Its site footer reads 2026 HANTEO FAMILY NO.HF1082MKO001, and that string matches the code on Hanteo’s list character for character. Hanteo lists five store codes for the company: four online storefronts, in Korean, English, Japanese and Chinese, and one shop, marked 명동.

That is the check, and it takes about twenty seconds: read the number off the shop, then search that number on Hanteo’s family page.

The same shop answers a question its customers evidently keep asking, in a notice of its own. Ordinary purchases, it says, are sent to Hanteo in a batch on the hour. Event items go the same day. Pre-orders go after the release date — and if a fansign entry deadline falls on the 초동 cutoff, everything sold up to that day is included with nothing left out. So “did it count” and “did it count yet” are different questions, and the answer to the second one can be “not for up to another hour”.

The ranking follows a column that is not the sales column

Hanteo’s real-time album chart shows two numbers per row: 판매량, sales, and 음반 지수, which the English page renders as physical record index.

The ranking follows the index. On the snapshot we took, the album at number three had 655 copies sold and an index of 2,292.50, while the album at number four had 2,000 copies sold and an index of exactly 2,000.00. Number three outranked number four while selling under a third as many copies. Reading down the table, the index column descends without exception and the sales column does not.

We are not going to tell you the formula, because Hanteo does not publish it on that page and we did not find it elsewhere on the site. What we can tell you is the consequence, which is the part that affects a purchase: the number of copies you buy is not the number the chart adds up. If you are buying to move a rank, the format and the edition you choose are doing something to the arithmetic that nobody has explained to you. The number three album on our snapshot was an LP.

That is worth holding next to how a Korean song can climb back up a chart two years after release. Korean charts are engineered objects, and their published rules are shorter than their behaviour.

You did not have to fly here

The most useful thing on the family list, for anyone reading this before booking a flight, is how much of it is not a counter in Korea at all. Universal Music Japan and Warner Music Japan are on it. So is KPOP USA, and Kaido Italia, and Whosfan China, and Five Music, which the Korean page labels Taiwan. K Place appears with two store codes that name Los Angeles and Buena Park. Tower Records, mu-mo, Lawson Entertainment, FYE, Music Plaza, Choice Music, Ktown4U, Weverse, YesAsia and Cokodive all carry codes as well. Hanteo’s own English chart header says the chart aggregates sales from more than 5,000 online and offline retailers worldwide.

There is a shortcut for reading that list, and we are offering it as a pattern rather than a rule because Hanteo publishes no key. The four digits after HF in a family code look like an international dialling code. Warner Music Japan and Universal Music Japan are 0081. KPOP USA is 0001. Kaido Italia is 0039. Whosfan China is 0086. Korean companies are 0082, which is most of the list. Two entries break it: Five Music, which the Korean page labels Taiwan, is 0026, while another Taiwanese shop is 0886 — and 886 is the number you would dial. Useful for a first scan; not a fact to rely on.

So the case for buying albums in Seoul is not that it counts more. It is that you can put your hand on the version you actually want, at a shop where the code is on the door, without paying to ship a box of cardboard across an ocean. If you are already coming — and if you are, the harder problem is getting a concert ticket as a foreigner — then the list tells you which counters to walk to. If you are not coming, the same list tells you that you were never at a disadvantage.

What we did not check

We did not count store codes across the whole list. We opened the companies named in the table above and counted their codes on 3 September 2026. Both lists change: Hanteo renews the certification mark by year, and companies enter and leave.

We did not verify any shop’s badge in person. Everything above about door placement is Hanteo’s published instruction to its shops, not an observation of a door. The one code we matched end to end — Music Korea’s — we matched between two websites, not between a website and a shop front.

We do not know Hanteo’s index formula, and we did not test whether a specific format is weighted. The two rows we quote are one snapshot, taken at 17:44 KST on 3 September 2026.

Hanteo’s own pages give three different store counts — about 1,100 for the physical album chart, over 1,500 record stores synced, and more than 5,000 retailers on the chart header. We have quoted each where it appears rather than picking one, because we cannot tell which counts branches and which counts companies.
