Nami Island from Seoul: The 16:30 Coach and the 21:30 Ferry
₩19,000 including the boat, a wharf in a different province from the island, one Seoul coach that leaves at 16:30, and ferries running four hours after it has gone. Between 18 September and 22 November the island adds boats — and its own schedule page still prints the old last-ferry time underneath the notice saying so. Read off the operator's and the railway's pages on 8 September 2026.
Why this scene matters
Korea’s national tourism body describes this island, on its English site, as “a destination well known to fans of the drama .”
The sentence ends there. The drama has no name in it.
It is not censorship and it is not laziness. Korean writing puts titles inside angle brackets — 〈겨울연가〉 — and somewhere in the pipeline those brackets became the ASCII kind. <Winter Sonata> is not a title to a web browser. It is an unknown HTML tag, and the browser swallowed it whole. The words are still in the page source. They are simply not on the page.
So the one word that tells a K-drama viewer why this island exists as a destination — Winter Sonata — is invisible on the official English page about it, while the Korean side of the same organisation reads normally. The filming claim on this article is that page’s, not a production credit we have seen: the Korea Tourism Organization writes that the island “first gained popularity as a filming location” for the drama, and that is as far as our sourcing goes. We have written before about English pages in Korea drifting from the Korean ones; this is a smaller and stranger version of it, a fact deleted by a punctuation mark.
The rest of the island is more tractable. It is also, in a few specific places, on a clock.
The island is in one province and the boat is in another
Nami Island is registered at 1 Namiseom-gil, Namsan-myeon, Chuncheon, Gangwon. You cannot get there from that address. The wharf is at 1024 Bukhangangbyeon-ro, Gapyeong-eup, Gapyeong, Gyeonggi — a different city in a different province, on the other side of the water.
The operator says so itself, at the top of its own directions page, before anything else:
남이섬은 [강원도 춘천]에 위치해있으나, 남이섬에 들어오시기 위해서는 [경기도 가평]에 위치한 남이섬 선착장으로 방문해 주셔야 하며 Nami Island is located in [Chuncheon, Gangwon], but to enter Nami Island you must come to the Nami Island wharf located in [Gapyeong, Gyeonggi].
Nami Island Co., Ltd., official access page (주)남이섬 「남이섬 오시는 길」 8 September 2026
That warning is on the page because people get it wrong, and the tourism board’s own destination entry is a way to get it wrong: it lists the Chuncheon address under the heading “Address”, with no wharf. Typed into a navigation app it will route you to the far bank. The operator’s English footer is the model here — it prints both, labelled, with postcodes: wharf 12422, island 24464. If you are handing an address to a taxi driver, hand over the Gapyeong one.
For navigation, the operator gives the name search as 남이섬 선착장 (Nam-i-seom seon-chak-jang), Nami Island wharf.
₩19,000, and one row of the fee table with no price in it
Admission is called a visa fee, because the island bills itself as a micronation. It includes the round-trip boat.
| Ticket | Ferry both ways | Motorboat in, ferry out |
|---|---|---|
| Regular | ₩19,000 | ₩29,000 |
| Discount | ₩16,000 | ₩26,000 |
| Special | ₩13,000 | ₩23,000 |
Discount is middle and high school age, and 70 and over. Special is 36 months to elementary age. Groups of 20 or more take 10 per cent off the total, and the group and free-entry benefits apply only if you go both ways by ferry — take the motorboat and they disappear. The motorboat needs at least two passengers to leave and carries five.
Two things here are worth reading slowly.
The first is a difference between the two language versions. The Korean fee page lists four discount categories: students, holders of a severe-disability welfare card, national merit recipients and their bereaved families, and over-70s. The English page lists two — students and over-70s. Most foreign visitors will not qualify for the two that vanished, since both are documented with Korean state cards; but the English page has quietly become a shorter list rather than a translated one. The Korean page also ends its free-entry note with a line the English page does not carry at all: 증빙서류 지참 필수 (jeung-bing-seo-ryu ji-cham pil-su), proof documents are required. If you are turning up expecting a free or reduced entry, bring the paper.
The second is stranger. The fee table has a fourth row, and the row has conditions but no amount. In both languages it reads: early bird, meaning a ticket bought and boarded before 08:00; from December to March, tickets bought after 18:01; from April to November, tickets bought after 18:31. Three discount conditions, no discount figure, in either language. We are not going to invent one. If you are counting on an evening saving, ask at the window.
And the early-bird condition contains a small trap of its own, which you only see if you read the fee page and the timetable together. Boarding before 08:00 is not possible on the scheduled service, because the first boat is 08:00 — except in one ten-week window, which is the next thing.
Ten weeks when the island’s own last-ferry line is wrong
Ferries run from 08:00 to 21:00 into the island, with the last boat off at 21:05. Every 30 minutes early, every 10 to 20 minutes from 09:00 to 18:00, every 30 minutes again after that.
Except that this year they do not, twice. The schedule page carries a notice of additional 2026 service:
추계 9.18.(금)~11.22.(일) - 첫 배 07:30 (매일) - 마지막 배 21:30 (금,토,일요일 / 공휴일 당일) Autumn, Fri 18 Sept – Sun 22 Nov: first boat 07:30 (daily); last boat 21:30 (Fri, Sat, Sun / public holidays).
Nami Island Co., Ltd., official ferry schedule page (주)남이섬 「선박운항」 8 September 2026
That window opens ten days from the date on this article, and it is exactly the autumn foliage stretch — the same weeks our foliage timing article is about.
Here is the problem. Directly underneath that notice, on the same page, in both Korean and English, sit the summary lines: first ferry 08:00, last ferry 21:00. They are not updated to match the notice above them. The summary lines are the ones people read, because they are formatted as the answer.
So for the ten weeks when this island is busiest, its own schedule page tells you two different things about the first and last boat, and the one that looks authoritative is the one that is wrong. The tourism board’s page is worse: it gives the ferry as 08:00–09:00 and 09:00–18:00 and stops, omitting the 18:00–21:00 band entirely. Read that page and you would think the last boat is at six.
Our reading, which we are marking as ours: treat the notice as the schedule and the summary line as a leftover, and if you are planning around the last boat rather than the first, telephone. The number is +82 31 580 8114.
The 16:30 problem
There is one direct coach between Seoul and the island, run for the operator by a contractor, and it is a round trip rather than two separate journeys. Outbound it leaves Hongik University Station Exit 4 at 09:00, Namsan Yejang bus transfer lot near Myeongdong at 09:40 and Dongdaemun History & Culture Park Exit 9 at 09:50, reaching the island at 11:30.
It comes back at 16:30.
That is the whole trap, and it is not hidden — it is simply printed as a timetable rather than as a consequence. Booking the coach buys you five hours on an island whose boats run for another four and a half hours after you have left, five in the autumn window. The late-entry discount row you read about above is unreachable on the coach. So is the 21:30 boat. Pets are not allowed on it either.
If your day is going to end late, the railway is the answer and not the coach.
Getting back: the last three trains, and the one that stops short
Gapyeong Station is 1.5 km from the wharf: about 20 minutes on foot, or five minutes by taxi or the 10-4 local bus. The operator publishes those figures; we have not walked it.
From there, these are the last departures toward Seoul in Korail’s own timetable files, in force from 1 September 2026:
| Weekday | Weekend and holiday | |
|---|---|---|
| Last ITX-Cheongchun to Yongsan | 22:32 | 22:30 |
| Last Gyeongchun Line to Cheongnyangni | 22:26 | 22:24 |
| Last Gyeongchun Line to Sangbong | 23:11 | 23:12 |
| Last train of any kind | 23:57 | 23:37 |
The last row is the one to look at twice. Those final services do not go to Seoul at all — they terminate at Pyeongnae-hopyeong, in Namyangju, which is on the same line and roughly halfway. A visitor watching the platform display and boarding the last train because it is the last train ends up in a suburb at midnight with a taxi fare instead of a subway ride.
So the real last train to Seoul from Gapyeong is 23:11 on a weekday, or 23:12 at the weekend, and it goes to Sangbong. If the station you need is Cheongnyangni or Yongsan rather than Sangbong, your cut-off moves back to around half past ten.
Against a 21:05 last boat, that is a comfortable margin. Against the 21:30 autumn boat it is still comfortable. It stops being comfortable if you assume the coach and the train are interchangeable, or if you have been reading the 18:00 figure on the tourism board’s page and have not planned an evening at all.
We have not printed a rail fare. Korail’s fare tables on that page cover KTX and the long-distance ITX classes only; there is no ITX-Cheongchun or Gyeongchun Line fare table published there, and we are not going to estimate one. Our Seoul transport fares article covers how the transit-card distance fare is built, which is the mechanism the Gyeongchun Line stopping service runs on.
Driving instead: parking is ₩6,000 for a small car and ₩10,000 for a large one, covering the first 12 hours, then ₩1,000 an hour. Registering the vehicle on the Kakao T app before you enter brings it to ₩5,500 and ₩6,000. Card only — the car parks do not take cash.
Rain is not a reason to cancel, and the notice saying so is only in Korean
The Korean notice board carries six notices. The English one carries three. One of the three that did not make it across is this:
비가 오나 눈이 오나 남이섬은 선박 정상 운항중입니다. Rain or snow, Nami Island's boats are running normally.
Nami Island Co., Ltd., notice board: 'Boats run normally in the rain too' (주)남이섬 공지사항 「우천 시에도 선박 정상운항합니다」 8 September 2026
The same notice goes on to suggest a raincoat and boots and lists what is open indoors — the picture-book playground, the UNICEF lounge and five galleries, all free once you are through the gate. Nothing about it is Korean-specific information. It is simply advice that exists on one side of the site and not the other, and the practical effect is that a visitor checking the English pages on a wet morning finds nothing and stays in Seoul. This is the reverse of our Cheonggyecheon article, where rain genuinely does close the place; here it does not, and only the Korean page says so.
The entry rules, to be fair, are properly translated. The whole island is non-smoking outside designated points, on the strength of that UNICEF certification rather than as a preference. No camping, cooking, tents or shade shelters. No amplifiers. No drones. Dogs under 20 kg on a lead are welcome, five legally designated dangerous breeds are not, and assistance dogs carrying the official marker are admitted without restriction under the Act on Welfare of Persons with Disabilities. And the one that catches cyclists: your own bicycle, e-scooter or kickboard cannot be loaded onto the ferry. Rent theirs on the island or walk.
What this article does not claim
Every figure here is the operator’s or the railway’s, read on 8 September 2026, and none of it has been tested against an actual boat or train. The train times are the departures in Korail’s own timetable files for services from 1 September 2026, and timetables change. The 21:30 autumn ferry is stated by the operator as running on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, but the operator does not say whether 21:30 is the last boat into the island or off it — the normal pair is 21:00 in and 21:05 out, and we have not assumed the same five minutes applies. We have not printed a rail fare or an early-bird discount amount, because neither is published anywhere we could open. And we have not been to this island: the photography section above tells you what the operator forbids, not where to stand.
How to get a similar photo
- Where to stand
- We have not stood on this island, and we are not going to invent a viewpoint from a desk. What we can give you is the operator's own constraint list, which is the part that actually changes your pictures: drones are banned outright, and you cannot load your own bicycle, e-scooter or kickboard onto the ferry — so every frame is taken on foot or from their rental bikes and the island buses.
- Which way to face
- The crossing is about five minutes and the island comes into view from the boat, which is the one composition nobody has to go looking for. Beyond that the operator publishes no viewpoint list in English, and we are not going to give you a compass bearing we have not checked.
- Framing
- both
- Best time
- The first crossing. For most of the year the first boat in is 08:00; between 18 September and 22 November 2026 the operator adds a 07:30 departure every day, which is the only period its own timetable shows a boat before eight.
- Avoiding crowds
- The single Seoul direct coach leaves the island at 16:30 while boats keep running until 21:00, or 21:30 on autumn weekends. The last hours are thinner than the middle of the day for a structural reason, not a seasonal one.
- Simple props
- a raincoat and boots — the operator's own wet-weather advice, since the boats do not stop for rain, a transit card for the Gyeongchun Line, cash is optional: there are ATMs both outside and inside the barrier
This is a suggested photo angle for visitors, not the production's confirmed camera position.
The place
- Name
- Nami Island (Naminara Republic) — boarding at Gapyeong Wharf · 남이섬 (나미나라공화국) — 가평 선착장에서 승선
- Address
- Wharf: 1024 Bukhangangbyeon-ro, Gapyeong-eup, Gapyeong-gun, Gyeonggi-do 12422. Island: 1 Namiseom-gil, Namsan-myeon, Chuncheon-si, Gangwon-do 24464
- Status
- Operating
- Best season
- Mid-September to late November, which is when the operator itself puts extra boats on. The added service runs 18 September to 22 November 2026.
- Getting there
- Gapyeong Station, on the Gyeongchun Line and served by ITX-Cheongchun, is 1.5 km from the wharf — about 20 minutes on foot, or five by taxi or the 10-4 local bus. The operator gives Sangbong to Gapyeong as about 50 minutes on the Gyeongchun Line, and Yongsan to Gapyeong as about 60 minutes on ITX-Cheongchun.
- Transport
- We have not printed a rail fare. Korail's published fare tables cover KTX and the long-distance ITX classes; there is no ITX-Cheongchun or Gyeongchun Line fare table on that page, and we do not guess fares.
- Admission
- ₩19,000 for an adult, including the round-trip ferry. ₩16,000 discounted, ₩13,000 for children from 36 months to elementary age. ₩29,000 if you take a motorboat in and the ferry out.
- Bring
- a raincoat, not a cancellation, ID or documents if you are claiming a free or discounted entry, a lead, if the dog is under 20 kg
The island is reached only by boat, so the last departure is a hard cut-off rather than a closing time you can stretch. The operator states that ferries run in rain and snow, and recommends a raincoat and boots rather than staying away. The whole island is non-smoking outside the designated smoking points, and drones are banned.
Fit it into your day
- Morning The 08:00 boat, or the 07:30 one in autumn
Ferries leave every 30 minutes between 08:00 and 09:00, then every 10 to 20 minutes until 18:00. The early-bird condition on the fee table requires boarding before 08:00, which only the autumn service makes possible. - Afternoon 16:30 — the coach goes
If you booked the Seoul direct coach, this is your day ending. It reaches Dongdaemun at 18:00 and Hongik University Station at 18:50. - Evening 18:31 onward — the late-entry row
From April to November the fee table lists tickets bought after 18:31 as a separate category. It does not say what they cost. - Night 21:05, then the train
The last boat off the island is 21:05, or later inside the autumn window. From Gapyeong the last weekday train that actually reaches Seoul is 23:11.
Korean culture & history nearby
The island trades as "Naminara Republic", a themed micronation: admission is called a visa fee, the wharf building is an immigration office, and the annual membership is sold as a passport at ₩69,000 a year. Underneath the theming is one fact that changes how the place behaves. In December 2010 it was certified a UNICEF Child Friendly Park — the first in Korea and, by the operator's own account, the fourteenth in the world — and the blanket non-smoking rule follows from that certification rather than from house style. The wharf sits on the Bukhangang, the north branch of the Han river, on the Seoul–Chuncheon corridor the Gyeongchun Line runs along.
